Synopsis
Amata, adapted from the novel by Ilaria Bernardini, tells the story of Nunzia, a 19-year-old student who secretly gives birth to Margherita and leaves her in the hospital, unsure if she’ll reclaim her. At the same time, Maddalena, a 42-year-old architect struggling with infertility, is on the verge of adopting a child. In the ten days that follow, Margherita is caught between two women – Nunzia, her biological mother, and Maddalena, the woman who may become her adoptive mother.

Italy, 1981
Born in Rome in 1981, Amoruso graduated in literature and performing arts from the Sapienza University of Rome. She later studied screenwriting at the Centro Sperimentale. She’as written several short films, including Aria (2005), winner of the David di Donatello Award. Her short film Adil e Yusuf (2007) competed at the 64th Venice Film Festival and was nominated for the David di Donatello Award. Amoruso also wrote Good Morning Aman (2009), the debut feature by director Claudio Noce, which competed in Venice, as well as Passione Sinistra by Marco Ponti and La foresta di ghiaccio by Claudio Noce, starring Emir Kusturica. In 2013, she directed her first documentary, Off Road (2013). Three years later she directed Strane straniere (2016), and her latest film, Amata (2025), was selected for the Giornate degli Autori in Venice.
