Synopsis
Mafalda and Diego, two Galician siblings in their thirties, after many years without any contact with their grandmother Pilar because of a family dispute, inherit her country house in the north of Portugal as well as some money, but with a shocking condition: they must use that money to free themselves from work and so have time to create a story that perpetuates the family memory, since Mafalda, like her grandmother, has always been a great storyteller. Women as keepers of memory has been a longstanding theme. Trying to fulfil that challenge, the siblings move to the house near Ponte de Lima and there they’ll discover what their grandmother’s love really meant. They must find out who they are and what they want to do with their lives, their future and their desires. Will they succeed?

Raul Veiga
Galician screenwriter and director. He gained recognition when he wrote the video Veneno puro (1984) and went on to the big screen with the script for Continental (1989). He started to direct his own scripts with A metade da vida (1994), the only feature film shot in Galician and starring a Galician cast in the 1990s. Arde amor (1999) was his second feature film and it received many awards, two of them in USA festivals. He’s also worked as a movie critic and in film analysis, work reflected in the book Esta noite no cinema (2005), and was a jury member in film festivals. In 2014 he wrote and directed the documentary El médico atento. His last work as scriptwriter was for the TV-movie Contou Rosalía (2018). A avoa e o amor is his latest feature as screenwriter and director.
