Alén dos silencios

The first few months of my grandmother’s life take on a significance of which she was never fully aware during her 86 years. My grandmother was sent to the prison camp, with her mother or father, as a baby of barely six months. A reality silenced by the war, the post-war period and the nearly 40 years of dictatorship in Spain, now emerges to shatter the silences. I approach the old prison, where it all begins and where her path runs parallel to that of other women marked by the silences within their families. The turmoil of the (post) war and the dictatorship, turned into silence. In the search for lost memory or memories, we find ourselves interconnected by history and by individual stories. It’s dangerous for memory to replace history. It’s dangerous for history to silence individual stories.
